Unlike straight hair, curly hair
requires special maintenance so the curls look beautiful instead of messy and
to keep split ends from leaving it dry. The hair is unruly, prone to frizz and
tangles, and generally seems intent on doing only what it wants to do. With little care, you can maintain your curly
hair and avoid split ends with ease.
- Visit your hair stylist at least 6 times a year to trim split ends and set layers.
- Use lightweight products to maintain bounce and body. Your shampoo and conditioner should not weigh your hair down. Look for shampoos and conditioners that hydrate without being heavy.
- Don’t wash your hair daily. You may think that it’s good to wash your hair everyday but when you wash your hair daily you’re actually stripping it of its natural oils resulting in it being dry and frizzy.
- Shampoo your hair no more than twice per week, as excess shampooing can add static and frizz to curls, make hair dry, and produce split ends.
- Hot water can create frizz and dry ends, so rinse with cool or cold water to reduce frizz, avoid split ends, and add shine.
- Avoid towel drying the hair because this causes friction which increases the amount of frizz in your hair when it’s dry.
- Twist damp hair around your fingers to set curls and do not pull on the split ends. Let them bounce up and dry naturally.
- Never pull hair back in an elastic band. Use cloth scrunches, forgiving hair clips, and soft headbands instead.
